Home Cleaning Guide

There is no need to deep clean your home because lice only live on the head.  Lice can only sustain  for 24–48 hours on a human head. Do not use pesticide sprays on household items or furniture. Lice are immune to poisons. Using pesticides can have harmful side effects.

Drying

There is no need to wash your clothes or beddings. Putting clothing and beddings in a dryer for 45 minutes on high heat will kill the lice. Items like stuffed animals, blankets, bed linens, pillows, comforters, shams, backpacks, jackets, scarves or any clothing worn or used in the last 48 hours.

Vacuuming

Vacuum common spaces within 48 hours of finding lice. Carpet, rugs, cloth sofas and chairs. Cloth car seats and safety seats. Anything that can’t go in the dryer.

Freezing

Hot water would not kill lice. It is advisable to freeze items instead. Items such as hair ties, scrunchies,  brushes, hats and helmets should be put in a bag and stored in the freezer for two days.
